In this tutorial I'll cover some ideas about designing a picture through designing your own patterns.
Start with a square approximately 64 px by 64 px using the Rectangular Marquee tool then fill with brown using Shift+Backspace.

Apply Lighting Effects to the square.

Apply the Palette Knife filter to the square.

Click on the New Layer filter to add another filter and choose Neon Glow. Press OK.

Now apply the Water Paper filter to the square.

With the square selected choose Define Pattern and name it.

On a new layer create a new square and fill it with green.

Add noise to it.

Use Lens Blur on it.

And then apply Chalk & Charcoal.

Draw the base of a tree with the Pen tool then apply Layer Style and go to Pattern and apply the first pattern. Increase the size to fit in the area of the tree trunk.

Use the heart shape under the Custom Shape tool. Use the same process as above to apply the second pattern then use Control+T and Shift to rotate it 180 degrees.

You can now add the text and apply the first pattern as the fill and the second pattern as the stroke, add a drop shadow to it. Add the pattern to the background if you like. There are many uses for making your own patterns and using them in your creations.
