Setting Lights - e Frontier Poser Tutorials

1 OK..you have set up your scene. You are pleased with it, you are happy there's no more need to spend endless hours adjusting each element.. you think you're through and ready to render.. well.. you are wrong! Now it's the time to configure the most important thing of all! The lighting settings!

Lighting is the most crucial element of an image. The mood and atmosphere of the whole outcome are totally depending on the lights of your scene. Either they enhance it or destroy it! Take a look at Posette's example below.. default lights versus various lighting that has been set to achieve different effects.. the importance of what lighting can do to your scene I think is pretty obvious!

1 Getting accustomed to what each parameter dial does is the first step to feel comfortable with lights. So let's take a visual tour of what each one means and how it affects your scene. A picture speaks better than a thousand words to understand the basic concepts..

Part 1 - Infinite lights

To get the right idea of how shadows fall according to light, we need to work with just one light, preferably set to white color, set on the top of our world space, to have a clear vision of each single effect. I delete the rest couple of lights and I choose a torus for our scene with the ground turned on,  set to white as well, with no texture.

1 Map Size sets the resolution of any light's shadow map.. make it a habit to set at 1024 for more realistic effects, even though during rendering the lights calculation time will increase.. the more lights you have in your scene..the longer! However.. it is worthwhile to wait! You can set it even higher if you wish but rendering might take forever... so 1024 is the ideal compromise.

Even with the map size set rightl, the shadow we get with the default lights is too dark and sharp-edged, anything but realistic.. So let's soften that with the Shadow parameter dial.. How? Pretty obvious at the example below.. the lower the setting, the softer the shadow drop!

1

Intensity parameter dial is the factor that determines how bright your light will show on the scene. The lower setting the darker effect..

1 These 3 dials are all you need to remember for setting each Infinite Light.  Adding more lights. setting them up, positioning them and experimenting will set you further going.

Part 2 - Spot lights

Spot lights offer a lot more options to set so all kind of effects are possible. We can change our light from Infinite to a Spot light, through the Properties dialogue box.

1 Map Size, Shadow and Intensity work the same as described above on Infinite lights. So I always set myself the map size to 1024 even for a Spot light and soften its shadow.

1 Angle Start parameter dial sets how bright your Spot light will be at the beginning of the light cone that gets projected on your object. The higher set, the brighter the spotlight in your scene and the more sharp edged the circle of light projected.  We should be very careful while increasing this setting and always take trial renders to achieve the perfect Spot light edge effect we wish. Remember that shadows don't show in poser until rendering! Take a look at the examples below to see how increasing that setting affects your scene.. Angle End setting is untouched to the default Poser setting of 70.000 so far...

1 Angle End parameter dial sets how bright your Spot light will be at the end of the light cone that gets projected on your object. You should decrease slightly and experiment for more soft edge effects of your Spot light. Increase slightly for a brighter, bigger light diameter with shadows projected inside the Spot light area. The following examples are quite representative to understand clearly  what Angle End can do to the final look of your scene..

1 Distant Start parameter dial is determining the distance where the light starts to fall off. You won't need to use this setting unless you are projecting your object shadow against a wall or other surface and you want to achieve specific effects, as to the point your Spot light edge will start to soften.

Distant End parameter dial is respectively determining the distance where the light fall off ends. Same as stated above, this setting will be used in conjunction with Distant Start to determine the point your Spot light edge will stop getting softer.

Once you achieve a desired setting and effect, always remember to keep a preset for future use. Lighting preset files are small in size and can save you an enormous amount of wasted time to set just the basics right.  Lighting is the part of the scene that can actually take longer than any other procedure to set right, especially if you are after a certain effect..  The results though of your renders will be compensation enough and you'll be amazed yourself at their dramatic improvement!
