Tools needed: Paint Shop Pro
Skills needed: Vector and Node Editing
Colors: Flesh - Pale Pink - Gray
Images provided are to help give you an idea of the shapes. Feel
free to make your own adjustments so the Fairy Sprite is uniquely
yours. While I worked on the Fairy Sprite, I added a
"blank" layer in between each vector layer as I went
along. And I did name them "blank" so they could be
deleted later. That way everything is on its own layer and allows
you to make changes, do cutouts, add more detailing after you
convert to raster. This image was saved in PSP 7 format in order
to retain the vector layers. After my image was finished I deleted
the blank layers. Duplicate your original, close original, convert
your layers to raster and finish adding your details, shading and
finishing touches.
One final note then we'll get started. After I made each vector
shape I double clicked on one of the nodes and converted them all
to Cusp. When adding new nodes, they will be marked in blue, be
sure to edit the node. Sometimes it takes a little experimenting
so don't be afraid to try different settings. You can always undo.
Name your layers as you go, it is extremely helpful always. For
vector layers just Rename. Most of all, SAVE as you complete each
new layer. |

Open a 400x560
Transparent image. Set your Stroke to Null and Fill to a flesh
tone for the body. Preset Shape will be an Ellipse, vector
checked. See images below for shape and additional nodes in blue.
These are full sized representations throughout this tutorial and
using basic colors which can be changed later. That's a nice
feature of vectors, you can click on the shape layer, right click
and bring up its properties, then change the fill and stroke to
anything you'd like!

Okay, add a
"blank" layer, next we'll make her head. Still using the
flesh color, Ellipse, shape as shown below.
|
|
4 |
|
Blank layer, we'll
make her Hair. Use the gray if you wish, Ellipse. Shape as shown
below or make your own design.
|
|
5 |
|
Blank layer, we'll
make her Right Wing. Use the pale pink if you wish, Ellipse. Shape
as shown below.

After you're happy
with your shape, copy, add a blank layer, paste as a new vector
selection, mirror and make any adjustments. Rename Left Wing and
move these layers under the Body layer.

Blank, Dress, Pale
Pink, Ellipse, add nodes and shape as shown or make your own
design. This layer needs to be above all the other layers.

Believe it or not,
you've finished your Basic Fairy Sprite! Now you can delete those
blank layers, save your image once again, duplicate it, and add
your finishing touches. I put together the Fairy Sprite below to
give you a simple idea of what you can do to with the basics. I'll
be going back to my original image and adding more detail and
shape to the wings, add a separate ear so it can be placed in
front of her hair, maybe even make her a dress and shoes made from
vector leaves! The possibilities are endless!

I do hope you've enjoyed not only
this tutorial but the finished image you've made. Your image won't
be "exactly" like mine but that's the beauty of PSP and
using Vectors, every image is different! See you next time!!!
