Lightness Up/Down - Corel Paint Shop Pro Tutorial

Vikki Dawson

1 There are many applications for the Lightness Up and Lightness Down brushes in Paint Shop Pro. In this tutorial we'll convert a two color flat image into a more realistic representation. The Lightness Up and Lightness Down tools are wonderful for adding highlight and shading to an image.

Create a blank image 400 x 400 pixels.

Choose the Shapes tool. In the Tool Options palette choose Apple 2. Set your color palette to a deep red as shown below for both the foreground and background.

2 Draw the apple on the canvas. You should have something similar to below.

3 Choose the Retouch tool and select Lightness Down. Apply the settings shown below.

4 Gently pull the tool around the outer edges of the apply and the stem.

5 Choose the Paint Brush tool and in the Tool Options palette apply the settings shown below.

Select a darker color for the foreground.

6 Paint in the white area at the top of the apple and the stem.

7 Choose the Retouch tool and select Smudge. Apply the settings below.

8 Using the Smudge tool, smooth out the areas  you just painted in to blend them into the apple better.

9 Choose the Paint Brush Tool and a medium to dark shade of brown and paint down the center of the apple stem using the settings shown below.

10 The top of your apple should now be similar to the one below.

11 Choose the Retouch tool and apply the settings shown below.

12 Use the Lightness Down brush on the apple stem as shown below.

13 Using the Lightness down brush, paint a shadow for the apple stem.

Your apple should now be similar to the one below.

14 Choose the Lightness up brush and apply the settings shown below.

15 Gently dab the Lightness Up brush in the areas as shown below for highlights.

16 Using the Lightness Up brush also apply highlight to the stem as shown below.

17 Choose the Soften brush and apply the settings shown below.

18 Apply the soften brush to the apple stem and any rough looking areas on the apple body to smooth them out.

That's it. You have a more realistic apple in just a few minutes. You could further this by applying an apple texture to the apple before applying the Lightness Up and Lightness Down brushes. Have fun!
